Why Realtors Recommend One Moving Company Over Another
Why Realtors Recommend One Moving Company Over Another
When a client asks a Realtor for a moving company recommendation, the agent may actually give them two or three options and let them choose.
That is normal.
The goal is not to become the only mover they recommend. It is to build trust with a large amount of realtors and become one of the few companies they trust enough to put in front of a client.
1. TRUST
A Realtor is risking their reputation when they refer. When their referral lands well, they become the hero, when it doesn’t, it can tarnish their relationship with their client. They need confidence that your company will:
- Communicate professionally
- Show up when promised
- Move their items with no damage
- Treat the client well
- Handle problems properly
- Follow through
The less risk they feel, the easier it is to recommend you.

It Does Not Have to Be an Affiliate Program
You do not need to turn every Realtor into an affiliate. That can make the relationship feel more transactional for their client instead of trustworthy.
When a realtor refers business to their client, there is a difference between:
“Here are a few movers I trust.”
and:
“Use my link so I get credit.”
The second can make the recommendation feel less authentic and create extra friction.
The better goal is to make your company easy enough to trust with a large amount of realtors that a growing percentage of them recommend you without needing a financial reason.
2. MAKE THE REFERRAL EASY
A Realtor should quickly understand:
- Where you operate
- What types of moves you handle
- How to contact you
- What kind of experience their client can expect
The easier your company is to understand and work with, the easier it is to refer.
3. COMMUNICATION
Fast communication matters. But so does knowing that if something goes wrong, there is a real person who will take ownership of it.
Not a call center. Not an automated phone line. Not someone passing the issue around.
Realtors want confidence that you will take care of their client when something does not go perfectly.
And in moving, things will occasionally go wrong.
What matters is how you handle them.
4. THANK THEM
After a referred move, send the Realtor a quick thank-you and update. It goes a long way to keep the relationship strong.
For example:
“Thanks again for connecting us with Sarah. The move went well. There was a very slight slowdown with the stairway with one of the larger pieces, but the crew handled it properly and everything was completed successfully.”
That shows the Realtor something important:
Your team knows how to handle real-world problems.
That can make the next referral easier.
5. FAMILIARITY WINS
A Realtor cannot recommend a company they do not remember.
That is why visibility matters. But that does not mean constantly emailing the same agents.
Realtor marketing is a numbers game – Connecting with large amounts of realtors via email and social media will win.
Some agents will engage. Some will not. Some already have movers they like, and that is fine.
The goal is to get in front of enough of the right Realtors on multiple platforms so they become familiar with your company over time.
