Having been involved with protecting and moving hundreds of mattresses during my lifetime, I can tell you there are definitely some tricks to doing it most effectively.
Here is the simplest and most effective way to protect your mattress during a move. The process requires using an inexpensive but necessary item, a mattress bag.
What You’ll Need:
- Correct Size Mattress Bag – Amazon
- Moving Tape – Amazon
- Tape Dispenser (optional but makes it easier) – Amazon
Only use moving tape. Many other styles of tape will not stick correctly to the bag. Make sure the tape you use is strong enough to stick to the bag…Duct tape does not work, trust me. Clear moving tape is the best.
Here’s A Step By Step Tutorial For Protecting Your Mattress For A Move
- Stand the bed up vertically up against a wall.
- Open your mattress bag and pull it over the top of the bed and work your way down.
- Take the bed off the wall and lay it on its side.
- Push the mattress all the way to the back of the bag.
- Pinch excess bag material on the side and fold it over the side of the mattress and tape it down with a tape gun.
- Tape the bag shut like a present, and use extra tape to seal the opening. You can also tape all the way around the mattress to ensure it is closed all the way.
- Some professional movers will wrap the entire mattress in shrink wrap. If the mattress is moving locally, no need, if long distance you may want to consider that.

Using A Queen/King Size Mattress Bag For Queen Size Mattresses
It’s best to use a mattress bag that fits your exact size mattress. But, for queen size mattresses, sometimes you can only find a Queen/King size, and not specifically a Queen
If that’s the case, for a queen mattress, put the mattress in horizontal so the extra space is at the top where the opening is and not the side.
See the diagram below.
Do You Really Need A Mattress Bag?
When moving your mattress to another location, yes, definitely use a mattress bag. I suppose you can use other materials like painters plastic, but it’s far less effective than a mattress bag. If you are just moving from room to room, no need really for any protection. But if you are using a moving company or rental truck, mattress bags are essential.
These trucks are typically dirty so mattress bags will keep your mattresses from getting dirty during the move.
Where Do You Get Mattress Bags?
Here are some places to buy mattress bags:
- Home Depot or Similar Home Store
- Uhaul Locations or Uhaul Online
- From Your Moving Company
- Amazon
Mattress bags range anywhere from $5 to $10 each depending on where you buy them and how strong the material.
How Do You Move A Mattress?
The best way to move a mattress is with two people. Since most mattresses don’t have handles, you may find it a bit hard to get a grip on the mattress. Here’s what to do:
Grab a furniture blanket or sheet and fold it in half several times the same way until you get a piece that’s about a foot and a half in width and several feet long (long and skinny). Place the mattress on its side horizontally on top of the fabric and use the fabric to lift the mattress with one person on each side.
The sheet is there for something to grab on to and keep the mattress in sort of a “hammock” to safely and effectively move it from one place to another.
You may place the mattress on it’s side or vertical in the moving truck, preferably against a wall or up against a tier. If you’re moving it into storage, keep reading for the correct way to store a mattress.
How To Protect A Mattress In Storage?
When keeping your mattress in storage, many mattress companies say to store it flat, rather than upright. Storing it upright has been said to wear out the mattress in a way that it’s not meant to be worn. However, the box springs, you can keep upright.
So, if you’re moving into storage, you may want to move your mattress in the storage room last and place it on top of some flat pieces of furniture.
